In the process of building the hotel, Michael, an Irish stonemason fell to his death in 1885. Michael died in what is now room 218. Michael is known to play tricks on guests by pounding on the headboards or within the walls waking them from a deep sleep as well as playing with the lights and TV.
In 1908 a group of men purchased the hotel and converted it into the Conservatory for Young Women. It was a very exclusive and prestigous educational facility for young women from wealthy and high society families. A Romeo and Juliet romance between a socialite and a local poor boy blossomed. The father of the young woman forbade the relationship to continue. In accordance with the time and family structure beliefs, the young woman depressed flung herself from the highest balcony ending her life. A nurse dressed in white has been seen on the 2nd floor. And a gentleman in Victorian style clothing has been seen in the lobby. It is believed that these two ghosts are the result of ownership by Dr. Norman Baker a self acclaimed healer and doctor of cancer in 1937. He purchased the hotel to convert it into a spa and health resort to cure cancer. It is rumored that in the dark recesses of the spa and late at night, cremations and burials of body parts in jars were buried within the walls of the spa to hide his hellish experiements on patients and visitors. The law finally caught up with Dr. Baker and he was sentenced, sadly, to only four years in Leavenworth for his activites. Other spirits have been seen in rooms 2002 and 424. After several years of closure, the hotel was reopened in 1946. Today it is a thriving hotel and spa filled with laughter and joy but still, at night and when it is least expected, the spirits of those that remain make their presence known. |
