Description:
A mental asylum used from 1839 until 1981 served as the last home to many of Wayne County\'s deemed mentally incompetent and indigent residents. Named after the daughter of Detroit\'s postmaster this facility housed thousands of lost souls.

Built on 902 acres the facility was self sustaining - they grew their own food, raised cattle and pigs, dried tobacco for cigarettes, owned & operated their own theater, and even had a home for the deceased on the grounds.

Bridgette Biddy Hughes, 1841-1895, was the first patient of Eloise. She was buried in the cemetery. The most famous patient was Elijah McCoy, son of former slaves. Inventor of a lubricator of steam engines (the ?real McCoy? was coined for his lubricator), ironing board, and lawn sprinkler. He died 10/10/1929 from senile dementia caused by hypertension. He is buried in Detroit.

Staff currently housed in Building D, Kay Beard Building, have reported many odd things: voices, footsteps shuffling up and down the corridors, and a ghastly smell near the cemetery.

Others who have visited the grounds have experienced an array of paranormal occurrences. Not a place to go after dark! Lights go on and off, doors open and close, moans are clearly heard, and growls/moans are heard near the playground that was built for the office workers children to play on.

D Building (Kay Beard Building), firehouse, power plant and bakery are still standing. The worst thing about the Eloise is the not knowing. Not knowing how the patients were treated, what went on there behind the dark of night and closed doors. Was it a place where experiments and/or torture were visited upon the patients? It is not likely anyone will ever know as the documents like much of Elise was destroyed and is lost to us.
